Micrometer has announced it plans to trade its 3D XPoint fab in Lehi, Utah past the end of the year (via Tom's Hardware). This comes after revealing IT lost $400 cardinal this year alone due to a lack of demand for the technology. 3D Xpoint is the tech found in Intel's Optane drives and is a technology born out of a collaboration between Micron and Intel, the Intel Micron Flash Technologies (IMFT).

Intel and Micron ended this many-sided development venture in 2018 when Micron bought out Intel's share of the business for a cool $1.5 billion. Intel and Micron still retain the intellectual place of 3D XPoint, and this isn't expected to switch even with the sale of the Utah fab.

3D XPoint looked good and paper and was atilt to be a possible future of computer memory, but the reality didn't rather live capable the hype. While the performance in about areas is absolutely impressive, the general package doesn't make a great deal of sense to consumers, especially as SSD technologies have improved.

The committal to writing has been connected the wall awhile Hera: Intel announced it was ceasing the production of Optane drives for desktop consumers in Jan 2021. The brand will live along in data centres, where the price to performance ratio makes a administer more sense, just for the big majority of consumers, Optane is merely to a fault high-priced, and the benefits to a fault marginal.

Intel also manufacturers its have 3D XPoint media at its New Mexico fab, although how much information technology produces there, isn't clear. Intel could follow a latent buyer for Micrometer's Utah fab, although given it has agreed to trade its memory and storage business organisatio, including its SSD products to SK Hynix, so much a purchase looks unlikely.

It's clearly a leatherlike time to be an SSD manufacturer, although it's a great fourth dimension to be a consumer, with much great deals to comprise had when it comes to the best SSDs for gaming.

Alan Dexter

Alan has been writing active PC tech since in front 3D graphics cards existed, and tranquilize vividly recalls having to fight with MS-DOS just to get games to load. Atomic number 2 fondly remembers the killer combo of a Matrox Millenium and 3dfx Voodooism, and beholding Lara Croft in 3D first. He's rattling glad hardware has high as much every bit information technology has though, and is particularly happy when putting the latest M.2 NVMe SSDs, AMD processors, and laptops through their paces. He has a long-lasting Magic: The Assembly obsession simply limits this to MTG Arena these years.
